Exploring Old San Juan

Breakfast at Cafeteria Mallorca. A
mallorca is a sweet Puerto Rican pastry.
The one I had was filled with cheese and
bacon for breakfast. The food was good and
they had a nice selection of pastries. You
know its going to be good when you see
local police officers eating there.

Old San Juan is full of surprises like this.
The streets of Old San Juan are paved
with these blue bricks. When Spanish
cargo ships would sail into port they carried
these bricks for ballast. When they took
on cargo they wouldn't need the extra
weight so the city used them to pave the streets.
Ice cream from Himalaya Ice Co. This
ice cream is made to order. Sweet cream is poured on very cold steel plates. Other ingredients are then mixed in. When it
freezes the mixture is scraped up into
rolls and served. Its fun to watch them
make it and tasty to eat.

Spicy Caribbee is probably our favorite
shop in Old San Juan. They sell hot sauces,
spices, teas, jellies and such. The owner is
very friendly and outgoing. She gave us a
free item for being repeat customers. You
can order online. I will put a link at the end.
I recommend the Green Heat.
Tripletas are the national sandwich of Puerto
Rico. It means triple meat...beef, chicken and
pork. They are all seasoned, cooked together on
a grill then chopped up with onions and peppers.
Served on a roll with veggies and various sauces
they are huge. One fed Dawn, my Dad and I. This is the
same food truck Andrew Zimmern ate at on the Travel Channel. Next to
the food truck was a small cart selling piragua, which is ice
shaved off a huge block with flavored syrup.
It was cold, refreshing and cheap. A buck or two.

Dawn and I love Old San Juan and Puerto Rico
in general. We did a lot of walking and managed
to see a good portion of the city. Breakfast at Cafeteria Mallorca was fun. It's a little local joint. Their food is reasonable and tasty. I'm glad we found the Tripleta truck. We missed it on our
previous visit. Old San Juan is packed with history and fun to explore. The colorful Spanish colonial buildings really stand out. Everyone had another great day. Next up is Labadee, Haiti.
